How to Solve the Blank Screen Problem in Laptops

In today’s technologically advanced world it is difficult to imagine life without a laptop or desktop, and laptops from Dell, HP and other manufacturers are available with high performance and great features. In fact, portability being of utmost importance has forced everyone, from students to business associates, to upgrade to a laptop. You practically do everything on your laptop these days. In other words, life seems unimaginable without this gadget and yet there are some common problems that can ruin this experience. One such irksome problem is the blank screen. We usually dismiss this problem as inconsequent but when it becomes persistent we start scratching our heads to fix it immediately. Before moving to the problems and their relevant solutions, let us understand the kind of displays that a laptop has.
How to Solve the Blank Screen Problem in Laptops

A laptop's display is broadly classified into two categories, LCD and TFT. LCD, or liquid crystal display, uses the concept of polarization to provide a great picture quality. It incorporates two polarizing material with liquid crystals sandwiched between them. There is backlight that passes through the first material hitting the liquid crystals. These crystals get aligned in varying frequencies letting the light pass through them and hitting onto the next polarized material. This process brings out the final image. TFT, or thin film transistor, is a variation of LCD. It makes use of active matrix technology that controls the voltage flow using certain switches. These varying voltages when fallen on pixels result in accurate display image.

Be it LCD or TFT display, both these screens can go blank. So, it is important to find out what generally causes this issue and the remedial methods to follow.

  • Before jumping into critical reasons for the blank screen you can perform a basic test. Your screen may be turning black from time to time because of the sleep or hibernate mode. You may have set a very short duration timer that may be kicking off this problem again and again. Just check the timer and if this turns out to be the reason, then you should sit back and relax because this isn't a real technical problem.
  • Another check that is not as basic as the first one is to look for faults in the graphic driver software. If this software is corrupted, a blank screen will definitely greet you. This can be fixed by just updating the software.
  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor. If it works fine, then the problem may be related to FL inverter failure. This component is responsible for the backlighting of your laptop screen. You need to get this replaced to solve the problem.
  • Another component that may need replacement can be a faulty data ribbon. This ribbon connects the motherboard to the laptop screen and its failure corresponds to a blank screen.
  • If you have overworked your laptop, you might see a blank screen. All you need to do is give your laptop some rest and your screen will be back to normal.

So the next time you face a blank screen problem, isolate the issue and then work on the solution.
